The Baltimore Folk Music Society
Dedicated to Folk Culture Since 1975
The Baltimore Folk Music Society is a not-for-profit educational society dedicated to the teaching and promotion of folk music. They sponsor dances, concerts, and other family events such as Catoctin Mountain Fall Music & Dance Weekend as well as the Cajun and Zydeco Dance Camp. Baltimore Folk Music Society is a member of the Country Dance & Song Society of America, and is affiliated with the Folklore Society of Greater Washington and the Annapolis Traditional Dance Society.
The BFMS is mostly funded from membership dues. Members receive the BFMS newsletter eleven times a year and also receive discounts at BFMS-sponsored events. Additionally, the BFMS sets aside $500 annually to be rewarded to a member who wishes to upgrade their folk skills. Funding also comes from tax-deductible donations and grants.
Membership is open to anyone! The cost is only $20 per person, and $30 per family. There are also discounts with multi-year memberships. You'll get all the great benefits listed above, including preferred admission to the Mid-Winter Ball, the Playford Ball, and the Catoctin Mountain Music & Dance Weekend. If you live outside of Baltimore, you can just subscribe to the BFMS newsletter for $12.
To see what the Baltimore Folk Music Society is all about, come to their Catoctin Mountain Music and Dance Weekend, which happens in the summer from June 17th - 19th and in the fall from October 21st through October 23rd. You'll have great fun participating in concerts, dances, song swaps, hiking, swimming, campfires, and eating great food! Dance, instrumental, and vocal workshops are offered, and BFMS members receive a $12 discount!
Buffalo Jambalaya Cajun & Zydeco Dance Camp
The Baltimore Folk Music Society is also proud to present the Buffalo Jambalaya Cajun & Zydeco Dance Camp in Capon Bridge, West Virginia, just 2 hours west of Baltimore. From June 23rd-26th, you'll enjoy music from Curley Taylor & Zydeco Trouble, Zydeco Force, and the Lafayette Rhythm Devils. Learn dances from Janine Dugas & Chris Trahan and Harold Guillory & Amanda Lavigne. You'll also enjoy food by former Best Louisiana Chef Michael Richard. That's three great bands a day, great food, and great workshops for four days. There's a $10 discount for BFMS members.
Get your contra dancing on
In the BFMS, you can also participate in contra dancing, a form of North American folk dance similar to square dancing. The best part is anyone can do it! Your feet never do much more than walk to the music, and the caller will perform the dance before you're expected to. Beginners and experts dance at the same time and with each other. It's a great alternative to unpleasant dance halls, because contra dancing is a relaxed family atmosphere where anyone is welcome. You don't even need to bring a partner.
Join the Baltimore Folk Music Society and you'll have the time of your life. Call (410) 366-0808 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for more information
